Tell Me Again About the Night I Was Born
by Jamie Lee Curtis
=============================================================
A 7 year old girl asked me to read this to her the other day. She was adopted at the age of one and she is originally from Korea. This is one of her favorite books.
I can't even begin to explain how touched I was while reading this to her. When we got to the page about how her mom couldn't have a baby and her birth mom was too young to keep her, the little girl said, "just like my mommy" with a huge smile on her face.
It is so wonderful that this book is out there for children to read. You could tell my 7 year old friend is so accepting of her situation and this gives her a story she can relate to.

The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats
Peter wakes up one morning to find that it has snowed hard the night before. He spends his day in the snow playing. That night he dreams of snow and awakes to another snowy day.
The illustrations really pulled me into the story. They were calm and fresh just like freshly fallen snow.

Where the Wild Things Are
This is one I remember reading when I was a child. It was one of my favorites.
In this story Max gets punished and is sent tto bed without dinner. He imagines a world of wild things where he is the king. Max gets tired of being wild and want to return home.
This book deals with emotions (fear, anger, frustration.) THe illustrations are a liitle dark, but they match the storyline. Great use of alliteration in the text.
This book can be read in a classroom. Children could be asked if they have ever felt like Max did at the beginning of the story. You could discuss jungles and perhaps make a small one with seeds.

Jazz on a Saturday Night
Jazz on a Saturday Night
by Leo and Diane Dillon
The setting of this book is a jazz club in the 1940's. The band playing consists of such greats as Miles Davis and Ella Fitzgerald.
I was just amazed by these illustrations. It's as if the music jumps at you off the pages! The illustrations are collage like and the backgrounds swirl making the pictures flow along with the rhyming text.
Also, there is so much you could do with this book. Not only does it give a short biography of the musicians it also shows a variety of instruments.
